Though we stick to our tradition & culture, we open heartedly accept the modern trends in every sphere of life.Kannur the North Malabar region that extends from Mayyazhipuzha to Chandragiri puzha throbs in this tradition. We can never forget the story of Veera Pazhassi, Kolathiri Raja, Arakkal Beevi and Chirakkal Thampuran. From their heroic memory the revolutionary moments of farmers and agriculture labourers came to light. Sincerity is the significant feature of peoples of Kannur. They are ready to sacrifice even their lives for their dear ones.



    The first Malayalam daily Rajaya Samacharam was launched from Gundert Bungalow at Illikunnu, Thalassery. Cricket was brought to kerala by colonel Ather Wellessly and was first played at Thalassery several notable football matches were played at Kotta maidan in Kannur and many international players participated in it. The football front in Kannur offers free coaching to talented childrens. Herman Gundert who lived in ‘Thalassery created history by compiling the Malayalam – English dictionary. The war against British led by Pazhassi Raja and invasion of Hyder Ali and Tippusulthan ended in bloodshed. The agitation by farmers against land lords created several martyrs and now red flags are fluttering in every nook and corner of the district. Kannur is also known as the red fort of communism


    The major employment provider in this district is Kerala Dinesh beedi that was formed after the closure of Manglore Ganesh beedi. Now Dineesh is in the way of diversification and has entered in the field of IT, Textile, food processing etc.

    Kannur is the fertile land of inborn talents, be it in film, circus, ritual dance, flock dance, martial arts or in computer graphics we are in the forefront. The cine artistes like Sreenivasan, Vineeth, Vineeth Sreeniasan are the glittering stars of Malayalam film industry. Most of the famous circus companies are managed by people of Kannur. Top graphic artists & software engineers in the leading IT companies are the people of Kannur. The founder of Rediffmail Mr: Ajith Balakrishnan is also the shining stars of Kannur.


    The Pariyaram medical college, Kannur medical college, Co-operative hospitals and a number of pvt hospitals are offering ultra modern facilities . Malabar cancer centre at Thalassery gives solace to hundreds of cancer patients in and out of the district. Besides, the Pappinissery Visha Chikilsa kendram is offering effective treatment for snake bites.


    The reins of kerala polities are often in the hands of leaders of Kannur. Eminent leaders of national stature AKG, E. K Nayanar, Pinarayi Vijayan, Kodiyeri Balakrishan, N.E Balaram, and congress Leader K.Karunakaran are from this district.

    Kannur Airport at Mattanoor will became a reality very soon. It is said that said that this Airport is in third position in India in terms of revenue. Kannur is the place from where the largest number of people are working abroad. Even in small towns, luxury villas and shopping Malls has become a common sight. Construction of apartments has also become a flourishing business in Kannur. People from southern districts came to this place in large numbers and most of them settled in hilly region and made use of the fertile land there especially for Rubber plantation. Major part of cashew nut is produced from Kannur district.

    Muzhappilangad Beach [15 k.m away from kannur]
    • It is Kerala's only drive- in-beach. Its about 5 k.m long beach with clean surface is suitable for running vehicles at maximum speed. (150km/hr) This beach is also safe for sunbath
    Dharmadam Island [20 k.m away from kannur]

    Kappad Beach 16 K.M away from Calicut
    • It is in this beach, Vasco-da-Gama the Portuguese navigator first landed in 1498. It is situated about 16 km away from Calicut, the neighboring district of kannur. This green natural beach attracts tourists as well as historians.

    • The only Muslim kingdom in Kerala was the Arakkal kingdom. The descendants of Ali Raja who was popularly known as sea king, later got full control over Arabian sea. The interior setting of Arakkal Palace is an amazing sight. The historians of new generation throng this place regularly.

    • It is the only park in India which gives opportunity for the visitors to get a close watch of the highly poisonous snakes. It is a subsidiary of Pappinassery Visha Chikilsa Kendram .This park attracts both foreign and domestic tourists. This centre offers effective treatment for snake bites, by mixing Ayurveda and Allopathic system of medicine.     • Herman Gundert was a German missionary he ampiled the first Malayalam- English dictionary. He lived and worked in a Bunglow at Illikunnu, in Thalassery for 20 years from 1839 and it was called Gundert Benglow. He also started a Malayalam newspaper Rajya Samacharam. The statue of Gundert was unvalied recently in front of Thalassery stadium as a make of respect to the great lover of Malayalam.
    St: Theresa’s Church Mahe
    • The church is considered are of the oldest church in this region. It stands as symbol of French rule in Mahe. As this church situated near National highway NH & a large number of people from kerala and Karnataka visit this church during annual festival every year from 5th to 22 October.

    • It is believed that this temple is the seat of Lord Muthappan. (Toddy and dry fish is the favourite food of Muthappan!).Each and every day the theyyattam of Muthappan is performed here. Unlike other temples in Malabar, beaten rice (Awal) and boiled green gram(Cheru payar)are served to the devotees who come to this temple every day. It has been said that it is the Only temple that a nominal amount is collected from devotees for offerings to this temple (Vazhipade). Comparing to other theyyams in Malabar, Sree Muthappan is totally different from other theyyams performed in Malabar. So people keep a soft corner in their heart for Lord Muthappan. Vellattom is performed in the every day evening and Muthappan theyyam(thiruvoppana) is performed early morning.

    • Andaloor Kavu is situated in Dharmadam village which is about 8 km away from Thalassery. The festival (Kaliyattam) in this Kavu is mainly held on 4th to 7th of Malayalam month (Kumbam ). The story of Lord Sree Rama is the main theme of Kaliyattom. The theyyams like “Daivathar, Angakkaran, Bapporan, represents Sree Raman, Lakshman, & Hanuman respectively. The youths wearing white baniyan and "torth munde" called “kuluthattiyavar” represents Vanara Sena (The army of Sugreevan who assisted Rama to regain his wife Sita, kidnapped by Ravana). A large number of devotees assemble here during the festival days and witness theyyam and later at night wonderful display of fireworks.

    • It is one of the famous Devi temples in Thalassery and it is believed that this temple was built by Chirakkal Raja. The Bagavathi here is the combination of the spiritual power of Mahakali, Saraswathi and Mahalakshmi. Bagavathi first appeared here as a fish and incarnated and stayed in Vamal Temple near Koduvally a river mouth. After contributing the temple the raja invoked Devi and formed in this temple. There is a concept that Devi stays at Chirakka kavu till noon and later moves to Vamal temple near koduvllay. Devotees’ in large numbers from different parts of kerala come to this temple and witness the Thira festival of Valiya Thamburatty, Cheriya Thamburatty and Chorakkalathil Bagavathi.     • Sree Narayana guru was a social reformer and saviuor of the backward communities of kerala. He founded this temple in 1908 here. The temple is open to all people without considering caste and religion. The 100th anniversary of this temple was celebrated in 2008 colourfully. It is one of the few temples in kannur where a large number of marriages are solemnised every year.
